EADS Astrium GmbH will build one of the instruments for the NASA-led James Webb Space Telescope mission under a contract awarded by the European Space Agency. Astrium will build the Near-Infrared Spectrograph under a 69 million euro ($84.8 million) contract. The instrument, one of three planned for the telescope, will detect faint radiation emitted by distant galaxies and be capable of observing more than 100 objects at the same time. Astrium will develop and build the instrument at its facilities in Friedrichshafen and Ottobrunn, Germany, and the work is scheduled to be completed by March 2009. The James Webb Space Telescope is slated for launch in mid-2011.
