EMS Technologies Inc. will build a component for the NASA-led James Webb Space Telescope mission, the Canadian Space Agency announced Sept. 16. EMS's Ottawa-based Space & Technology Group will manufacture the telescope's fine guidance sensor with partner Com Dev of Cambridge, Ontario, under a contract worth 5 million Canadian dollars ($3.9 million). The fine guidance sensor, part of Canada's contribution to the program, will be used to point the telescope toward very faint stars. The James Webb Space Telescope, being manufactured by Northrop Grumman Space Technology of Redondo Beach, Calif., is slated for launch in August 2011.
