Raytheon Co.'s effort to field a new U.S. strategic military satellite terminal has fallen almost a year behind schedule due to technical challenges, according to a new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office. In June 2014, the U.S. Air Force awarded Raytheon a $298 million contract to develop the Family of Beyond Line-of-Sight Terminals, or FAB-T. The service had expected to award Raytheon a low-rate production contract in September 2014, but that timetable has been pushed to August 2015 due to delays in hardware qualification and system level testing, the GAO said in its annual report to Congress on military space acquisition, released April 29. "We are working closely with our government customer to ensure the FAB-T program is executed as quickly as possible, while still meeting all system requirements," B.J. Boling, a Raytheon spokesman, said in a May 8 email to SpaceNews. "Solutions have been identified and are being implemented for any developmental program related issues, none of which are significant."
