Daniel Goldin's tenure as NASA Administrator was marked by both innovation and cost-cutting--as exemplified by the 'faster, better, cheaper' maxim--which produced achievement and failure as well as praise and condemnation. His three-fold management strategy of encouraging risk taking, promoting miniaturization and reducing the numbers working on complex missions is analyzed. The author considers how far this was effective and suggests that history may view Goldin's administration as a bold first step towards displacing an inappropriate and unsustainable culture of uncontrolled spending on space.
