"SHENZHOU" is the first manned spacecraft developed by China. In order to enable the astronaut to return to earth safely, several key subsystems concerning re-entry atmosphere must be successfully developed. One of the most important is the thermal protection system (TPS). In this paper some of the main subjects in the evaluation of TPS are therefore introduced. Based on the correct analysis of the re-entry heat environment over the surface of thermal protection shield, the most suitable TPS concept is chosen. With the support of ground tests, ablative materials have been screened and the thermal protection structure is verified. Some local thermal protection problems are treated very carefully and also verified by ground tests. The TPS of the spacecraft was then verified by the successful flight.
