As the Mars helicopter Ingenuity was being prepared for its first test flights on the Red Planet in March 2021, NASA announced that a small piece of muslin fabric from the Wright Brother's first aircraft flown in 1903 was placed aboard the tiny flying machine. The gesture was intended to commemorate the first flight of an aircraft on another planet, 117 years after the first aircraft flew on Earth. NASA triumphantly achieved their 'Wright Brothers moment' on 19 April 2021. This fabric sample was one of over a dozen "embellishments" that NASA added to the Perseverance rover (officially called "festooning" by NASA) prior to its launch on 30 July 2020.
