While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin conducted the first historic lunar landing and Moonwalk, it was Michael Collins who sat it out in the Apollo CSM Columbia. For 27 hours 51 minutes, and 14 lunar orbits, he dutifully made landmark sightings, photographed the surface and scouted future landing sites. But for Collins, the importance of his role as CM pilot was never in any doubt. As he himself said: "This venture has been structured for three men, and I consider my third to be as necessary as either of the other two." Equally, he was acutely aware that if the LM crew were left stranded on the Moon, he would be making the long flight home alone.
