In early January 2011, residents of the northern part of the Isle of Man watched as two low-loaders edged through the Manx countryside each carrying a single cylindrical shaped load, shrouded in tarpaulins and heavy cabling, writes Tony Quine. The vehicles reached their destination at a former RAF base at Jurby — now used mainly as a small industrial and manufacturing park but still retaining many of the buildings from its previous life — and the loads were moved into a former aircraft hanger. Within a few days Excalibur Almaz, a space tourism company head-quartered in the Isle of Man, announced that they had shipped the two Almaz space stations, which they had previously purchased from the Russian constructor NPO Mashinostroyenia, to the island for storage and eventual refurbishment. In late April, Excalibur Almaz hosted a two day media event to show the stations to the world.
