Sir, And so the reign of the Space Shuttle has come to an end, leaving historians with the task of deciding on its place in history. In many ways it was a curious, contradictory vehicle. The first to resemble the spaceship of people's imagination, but at the same time extremely limited, with a range of barely 500 miles above the Earth. Moreover, its rather ugly generic name made one think of old-fashioned shunting engines in railway goods yards rather than a sleek modern spacecraft.
