Dieter was born on 24 April 1913 in Charlottenburg, Prussia, Germany. From 1922 to 1931, he studied at the Schiller-Realgymnasium in Charlottenburg. From 1932 to 1937, he attended the Technische Hochschule, Berlin (Technical Institute in Berlin), graduating with the degree of Dipl. Ing. (Diploma Engineer, the equivalent of a Master's degree) in Electrical Engineering. From October 1937, Grau worked as an electrical engineer for Siemens-Schuckertwerke A.G. in Berlin-Siemensstadt. Then, from June to November 1939, he served in the Army with a tank regiment in the campaign in Poland and in Russia, near Charkov, and was in charge of the maintenance of all means of communications of a tank company.
