Not long after I arrived in the United States at a tender age, I had the good fortune to be allowed to dismantle a 'demonstration' V-2 engine - one which had been test fired but not launched. Descending upon this masterpiece of nascent German rocket engineering, in the naive belief that I knew what I was doing, I promptly set about the job with T-clips and hex-bolt extractors in the way I had dismantled my racing motorcycle in England. Wrong. Quickly realising my mistake, I sloped off to find someone who could explain the proper procedure. I found an engineer in shirt sleeves and very old trousers wandering about in the metallurgy laboratory and persuaded him that I needed advice and instruction.
