Mechanical fibres are characterized commonly by measuring their length distribution and freeness. However, this does not adequately indicate the influence of refining on the fibre's compressive mechanical properties. Here, we used cyclic compression on fibre mats to generate stress-strain curves from which several quality parameters can be derived, such as modulus, stress and toughness. The results revealed that the compressive mechanical properties of fibre are related strongly to the refining energy used to produce pulp. Fibres of similar length exhibit different compressive responses depending on the refining energy consumption.
