In this paper, a previously proposed colour difference model to estimate print-through is tested. As expected from the previous experiences, it was found that the traditional definition of print-through is inadequate for coloured papers and prints due to the fact that the effect of hue and saturation is ignored. Contrary to that, the colour difference model correlates very well to the preferences of the observers regardless of the colour of the paper or the print. Perceived print-through does not depend only on the average print-through level, but also on its spatial variations, i.e. on mottling of the print or non-uniform penetration of the ink. Therefore mottled prints were also studied. The basic colour difference model underestimates perceived print-through of mottled prints, if lightness of the print varies a lot in a millimeter scale. An empirical mathematical model to estimate perceived print-through of mottled prints is proposed in this paper.
