Sport is now so elevated as to have become a diplomatic issue of the highest order. Based on this fact, the article attempts to redefine sport by proposing a radically new way of thinking about the relationship between sport and politics. What do [nation-] states have or hope to gain through sport, which has in some ways superseded them? Indeed, might we now genuinely ask whether sport does not dictate the terms, as it were, to politics and diplomacy?
