The Moroccan solar plan that envisages installing solar power stations totalling 2,000 MW of capacity is a model project for the region. The project aims to make Morocco independent from fossil energy sources. In November 2009, the Moroccan government initiated the solar plan, called "Projet integre de production d'electricite solaire" (Integrated project for the production of solar electricity). By 2020, 2,000 MW of electricity are expected to be produced at five different production sites. The solar plants combined with the wind turbines and hydropower plants that are being planned at the same time will contribute some 42 % of the North African country's energy mix and should make Morocco more independent from energy imports. Both the labour market and industry-oriented research should benefit.
