This ambitious volume emerged from a conference held at Sciences Po in Paris in 2009, which sought to revisit the end of the Cold War after two decades. The book does likewise in light of the promises of the momentous events of 1989: that democracy would be extended, markets globalised and a new world order established. In addition, it seeks to go beyond the European nature of the 1989 revolutions to assess their resonance on other continents. (On that score, it should be noted - and regretted - that all the contributors to the volume are either Europeans or Americans, which limits the book's overall ability to present a truly global view of 1989 and its consequences.) The result is an impressive collection of stimulating, high-quality essays, many of which address the limits of either post-communist democracy or the market economy. Ivan Krastev and Jacques Rupnik offer an inspired analysis of the post-transition dissatisfaction with democracy in Eastern Europe, which they tend to view as the natural consequence of the 'normality' of democracy as it took root in the region. Also worth highlighting is Grzegorz Ekiert and Roberto Foa's description of diverging trends in civil society and civic life in various parts of post-communist Europe.
