Few memoirs are as well-timed as this one. In the aftermath of David Cameron's speech on Britain's role in Europe and the prospect of an in-or-out referendum, the topic of the book is centre stage. The key questions are whether the country's special relationship with the United States complements or competes with EU membership, whether London had any choice but to surrender the veto and whether European solidarity is worth the effort. The answers are suggested in David Hannay's short, well-written book.
