Silvio Berlusconi resigned as prime minister just a little more than six months ago. Yet it seems like years. His face no longer dominates the television screen; his exploits no longer fill the pages of the newspapers; and his gaffes no longer fuel the outrage of the foreign media. The off-colour jokes, the brazenness and the showgirls have all receded to the background. And while Italy continues to be rocked by scandal across the political spectrum, Berlusconi's sudden transition from omnipresence to relative (for him) marginality feels like a fundamental transformation.
