Mainstream political economists (like me) tend not to read more heterodox interpretations of current events. That is unfortunate. The heterodox literature may not be consistent with all the assumptions of mainstream economics or political science, but it has powerful insights to offer nonetheless. This collection, edited by Gareth Dale, is a good illustration. The various contributors come from the neo-Gramscian tradition, which means they tend to use social classes rather than individuals as the basic units of analysis. It also means they use a vocabulary that seems at times both overly vague and anachronistic; I'm not sure I know what a 'neoliberal' is, nor am I sure that self-described communists are really worthy of the name.
