Diminishing sea ice in the Arctic Ocean has awakened global interest in the opportunities offered for energy, shipping, fishing and tourism. However, this environmental change has also introduced risks of political, economic and cultural instabilities, and there is an urgent need for policy change to promote peaceful uses of the Arctic Ocean. On 9 May, Professor Paul Berkman assessed international law and the opportunities, risks and infrastructure responses it currently allows. He also discussed policy options in view of the four-year Arctic Climate Change, Economy and Society (ACCESS) Professor Paul Berkman project that is being funded by the European Commission and shared insights about the project and the EU's Arctic work.
