The IISS Forum for Arctic Climate Change and Security aims to bolster debate on all issues relevant to the strategic framework and environment in the region - from geo-economics and geopolitics to military and security cooperation. The first workshop, on the geo-economics of the changing Arctic, was held in London on 12 June. The workshop aimed to provide an interdisciplinary, multinational conversation, with participants from across the Arctic and near-Arctic region. The discussion ranged from the scope and pace of sea ice retreat to its effects on international trade flows, fishing stocks and areas, hydrocarbon exploitation and indigenous populations' traditional economic livelihood. An agenda is available to download at http://bit.ly/JVVQqDv. Two further workshops on the geopolitics of the Arctic and military and paramilitary collaboration in the region will be held in autumn 2012 and winter 2012-13.
