India's highest-ranking military officer, Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma, Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee & Chief of Naval Staff, addressed the IISS on 25 June on 'Metamorphosis of Matters Maritime - an Indian Perspective'. He highlighted the significant change that has recently taken place with the Indian government realising the importance of the navy to its national interests, security and diplomacy. Although India emphasised 'strategic autonomy', this did not mean isolation or that India would not shoulder her international responsibilities. Nor did it preclude building strategic partnerships, of which the navy was at the forefront, has been at the forefront. But, it did mean the 'independence to pursue policy options that best serve national interests'.
