On 12-13 April, the IISS convened a workshop entitled 'Making sanctions work: problems and prospects', in Singapore. The meeting continued our collaboration with the UN Panel of Experts, the group established by UN Security Council resolution 1929. The meeting focused on how well the UN sanctions on Iran are being implemented in Asia and the difficulties that regional governments and commercial entities have experienced in this regard. It also raised awareness of 'best practices' to concerned industries, organisations and states, and discussed the measures that must be taken in order to comply with the sanctions and the risks associated with infringing upon them. Regional participants voiced the need for further such events, which enable them to better understand the obligations they face in doing business with Iran, and allow them to make practical suggestions related to sanctions.
