On 14 June 2012, the IISS held a third workshop under a two-year MacArthur Foundation-funded project on strengthening nuclear security cooperation with China. Held in Qingdao, China, the meeting attracted nuclear-security experts and practitioners from China as well as North America and Europe. Highlights included break-out sessions on the integration of nuclear safety and security and nuclear Centres of Excellence and discussions on the more sensitive topics of transparency in nuclear security and the nuclear security challenges associated with a closed nuclear fuel cycle. The following day participants visited the construction site of two of the world's first AP1000 reactors at Haiyang to learn about their safety and security features. Participants shared similar perceptions of the risk posed by nuclear and radiological terrorism and all officials present reiterated the willingness of their countries to engage in the sharing of nuclear and radiological security best practices. The meeting was jointly organised by Dr Teng Jianqun of the China Institute for International Studies.
