After decades of political stagnation and sclerotic leadership, the Great Arab Awakening of 2011 has seen politics return to the Arab world. Prior to the unrest, the failure of pan-Arab nationalist ideologies, the strengthening of the security state, the degradation of governance, insidious social malaise, the rise of violent Islamic extremism and an enduring state of conflict and strife throughout the Arab Middle East had caused many to worry - and a few to anticipate with satisfaction - that the Arab slumber would become a permanent state of affairs.
