All history is political, at least insofar as the historian has a goal beyond producing a good read. This history has the goal of convincing us that the end of the Cold War did not coincide with the victory of liberal democracy over communism. Instead, the collapse of the Soviet empire, or, better, the way this was celebrated by people like Francis Fukuyama,tricked us into believing that we enjoyed 'free market[s] and democracy' (p. 572) even as we continued to labour under excessive and unnecessary state control. The recent economic and financial crisis, therefore, should not be interpreted as a product of the free market; rather, it should be understood as the inevitable consequence of a failure to set the market free.
