Farzana Shaikh's slim volume is the best published discussion I have read on the vexing issue of Pakistan's national identity, an issue that has troubled Pakistanis and their friends since the state was born. Because Pakistan was founded to be the homeland for Muslims of the Indian subcontinent, the definition of the country's Islamic identity lies at the heart of the puzzle.rnShaikh distinguishes among four dimensions of Pakistan's Muslim identity: Muslims as a community; nationalism; the historical memory of Muslim Mughals as the group entitled to rule; and religious identity.
