Sirs, Much of Rear Admiral Menon's letter is fair comment, reflecting an important Indian perspective on the ongoing events in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He makes some trenchant points, including about the limits of the European contribution in Afghanistan, and about the threat that the Taliban resurgence in Pakistan poses to India. I will comment here only on those parts of his letter that suggest the need for further clarification of the argument in my article.rnMenon attributes to both Hilary Synnott and myself 'the idea that the war in Afghanistan can be won without investing far more blood and treasure',rnand that 'current policies only need "tweaking" and that the US decision to send reinforcements might actually be a mistake by not permitting "a lighter footprint" that might better suit the Afghans'.
