Karr highlights the growth of interest groups within the European Union, attributing it tornthe increasing distance between the people of Europe and their elected representatives. She asks whether the undemocratic nature of interest groups and lobbyists makes them a danger to the people's interests.rnThese essays address questions of cultural compatibility raised by EU enlargement in the Balkans. The authors examine how Western Europeans and citizens of the Balkans perceive each other (and themselves), and ask to what extent ethnic, national, religious and linguistic differences could impede the integration of Balkan states with the rest of Europe.
