One of the more useful analogies to gain prominence in Cold-War nuclear strategy was the one between the US-Soviet confrontation and the game of 'Chicken'. Chicken reprises a famous scene from the movie Rebel Without a Cause in which James Dean's character wins the 'game'. Two macho young men are driving their muscle cars towards the edge of a cliff; whoever jumps out first, loses. More commonly, the game involves two cars driving directly towards one another. If both swerve, both players stay alive but nobody gets bragging rights; if neither swerves, both die but leave a legacy of true grit. If one swerves, he gets status while the other is humbled. Lacking the confidence that the other will cave, each driver chooses to swerve. These respective solutions constitute the best of the worst possible outcomes, and for that reason are termed 'minimax'.
