The collapse of the Soviet Union was both unexpected and traumatic, and its aftershocks continue to reverberate in today's Russia. In this lively and engrossing book, Shaun Walker chronicles Vladimir Putin's mission to fill the void left after 1991, and to forge a new sense of nationhood and pride. His vehicle has been to create a cult of the Second World War - the Great Patriotic War - in which the Soviet victory is the glue that holds the new Russia together.
