A mechanized timber harvesting using harvesters and forwarders is of a relatively little importance in Poland. Less than 1 % of timber is harvested in this way. The effectiveness of the use of harvesters in Poland is presented on the example of two forest districts in which Timberjack 1270B have been working since 1997. The average annual productivity of these machines range from 17 to 40 thousand m~3 of timber. The unit costs range from 10 to 24 PLN/m~3. The simulation of the costs of timber harvesting indicates that the use of harvesters in the final crop in comparison with the traditional harvesting using saws is profitable when the productivity equals ca 60 thousand m~3 of timber per year.
