家畜の生産性は環境ストレスや病原菌の感染などの影 響を大きく受ける。特に,近年の地球温暖化は家畜の生 産性や繁殖性に影響を及ぼしている。夏季の高温によ り体温が上昇した家畜では,呼吸数の増加や発汗の促進 により熱を体外へ放出する。また,採食に伴う代謝熱の 発生が体温上昇を引き起こすために採食量の低下が起こ り,結果として増体重の低下につながる。夏場のような 高温環境下における家畜への負荷による悪影響のことを 暑熱ストレスという。暑熱ストレスの対策としては家畜 の栄養状態の維持や酸化ストレスの改善などがあり,暑 熟ストレス下の生産性の低下を改善するような飼料添加 物が求められている。%Sugarcane extract (SCE) is produced by extracting active ingredients such as polyphenols from sugarcane, and has been reported to improve nutrient absorption capacity of the intestinal tract and to protect against infection by pathogens. Therefore, SCE is seen as a promising natural supplement for feed as an alternative to AGP in livestock production. Livestock productivity is greatly affected by environmental stress, pathogen infections and so on. In particular, global warming has been affecting livestock productivity and fertility in recent years. In view of these circumstances, we examined the effect of SCE on heat stress. Because the food intake of finishing pigs to which SCE was administered under high temperature in summer was increased, SCE is considered to have an effect of improving the decreased food intake due to heat stress. Increased body temperature of domestic animals promotes oxidative stress in the body. It is considered that resistance to heat stress of livestock is improved by preventing the worsening of oxidative stress since polyphenols contained in SCE have high antioxidant activity. This result and recent reports suggest that SCE improves livestock productivity by a combination of actions including enhancement of resistance to stress, protecting against pathogen infections and enlargement of intestinal area. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of SCE on the meat quality of livestock because consumers have become more attentive to food tastes. Sensory evaluation by sensory tests and analytical evaluation by a taste-sensing system showed that bad odors and unpleasant tastes of meat from chickens fed SCE were reduced compared to those of a control group. SCE shows significant promise to grow more popular as a feed additive which has the dual advantages of improving productivity and enhancing the taste of meat.
