The looming Zika virus looked ugly from the beginning. Early in the summer of 2016, we were concerned for the southern U.S. where the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector is common. But at this time last year, everyone in the U.S. was breathing a sigh of relief that we made it through the mosquito season with fewer cases of Zika virus than expected. Yes, there were cases in 2016, almost 5,000 reported from travelers who were bitten by mosquitoes in other countries and returned with the virus. Of concern, though, were 224 cases in limited areas of Florida and Texas that were presumed to be transmitted by local mosquitoes, not acquired through travel.
