摘要

The LITA/ALCTS Linked Library Data Interest Group met on February 1, 2015, at the ALA Midwinter conference in Chicago. Sarah Quimby, one of the Interest Group co-chairs, opened the meeting with a few brief remarks about Interest Group business before turning the meeting over to her co-chair Violeta Ilik for speaker introductions. The rest of the meeting was given over to three presentations highlighting linked data applications in a library environment. The first presentation by Dr. Kristi Holmes, the Director of Gaiter Health Sciences Library at Northwestern University, Associate Professor, Preventive Medicine-Health and Biomedical Informatics Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS), and a VIVO Project Engagement Lead, was titled "Opening up Science with VIVO," and began with a survey of the current health sciences research environment. According to Holmes, academic health sciences research is becoming more and more interdisciplinary, with investigators spread across large and increasingly diverse institutions, across multiple institutions, and across the public, private, and academic sectors. This wide-ranging environment creates many challenges for researchers and administrators as they seek out information on potential collaborators and mentors, potential competitors, and information on the state of current research. It also creates an opportunity for libraries, since supporting the "research networking" needs of their primary clientele is a core area of expertise. It also presents an excellent case for using linked data technologies to create and deploy semantically aware data to enable research networking in addition to interdisciplinary collaborations, data integration, and discovery across institutions.
