Finnish companies join forces to produce traceable face masks

In a short space of time, three companies have developed the technologies and established the infrastructure necessary for the production of face masks, the authenticity of which can be quickly confirmed, in Finland. At the beginning of 2020, no face masks were produced in Finland and, with the outbreak of the human coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic, the Finnish government had difficulties sourcing these items of personal protective equipment (PPE). Suominen Corp, a supplier of nonwovens for wipes based in Helsinki, responded by rapidly developing a fabric, Fibrella Shield, that passes the European standard for the filtration efficiency and pressure drop specified for the manufacture of such masks. European Standard EN 14683:2019 specifies the requirements for surgical masks as a barrier to particles with diameters in the range 0.65-7.0 μm.
