Efficient treatment of life-threatening aneurysms with implant

A fibre-based implant (called OccluTex) that reduces the risks associated with the treatment of brain aneurysms is being developed by the RWTH Aachen University Clinic in Germany.The standard surgical procedure for treating a cerebral aneurysm is the catheter-based filling of the cavity with metal embolization coils, which provoke the aggregation of thrombocytes that close the cavity. Depending on the size of the aneurysm, the implantation of a large number of coils may be necessary, which, in addition to increasing costs, extends the length of the surgical procedure and thereby increases risk for the patient. Further, 30-40% of treated patients experience complications caused by the migration of the coils, or because the aneurysm has not occluded fully, causing the problem to reoccur. A Professor at RWTH Aachen University's Institute of Applied Medical Engineering, Stefan Jockenhovel, says: "With the use of OccluTex, we will reduce the number of coils used in the future, thus lowering the costs of the treatment and shortening the treatment time, so that the patients are exposed to a significantly lower risk of complications."
