Often criticized for its lack of sufficient support for technical textile manufacturers, India's government is recognized as a key driver in the market for safety and protection products-still a sector with massive unrealized potential, reports Reena Mital. India's armed forces are the largest users of protective textiles and clothing in the country which boasts: 1. the world's second largest paramilitary force, with approximately 1.7 million troops; 2. the world's third largest standing army, with a troop strength of 2.5 million; 3. the fourth largest air force with a strength of 170 000 personnel; and 4. the fifth largest navy with approximately 60 000 personnel. Also, the police force in India has a strength of 175 000.
