摘要

Thanks to their flexibly adjustable mechanical and morphological characteristics, warp-knitted spacer textiles can be used in a variety of tissue engineering applications. By selecting suitable materials and constructions, they can be adapted optimally to suit the relevant loading conditions in the area where they are used. Combining the warp-knitted textiles with hydrogels creates the perfect conditions for the survival and reproduction of cells for regenerating natural tissue. The medical gold standard for treating irreparable tissue damage is to transplant the body's own healthy tissue into the affected area. This means, however, that the tissue is always damaged at the point of removal. Alternatively, donor tissue can be used in the defective areas, but the disadvantage of this is that not enough donor tissue and organs are generally available. Tissue engineering is one approach that could solve this scarcity, a process that involves developing artificial tissue for the repair and replacement of damaged tissue or organs [1, 2]. The Institute of Textile Technology at the RWTH Aachen University (ITA) and its Medical Textiles and Bio-fabrication Department are players in this interdisciplinary research field.
