In the hands of creative designers, typical technical materials can often be turned into completely new products - as the Spacer Chair designed by Samira Boon, Amsterdam/Netherlands, and Next architects, Amsterdam, shows. The Dutch product and textile designer Samira Boon originally studied architecture in Delft/Netherlands and spent time in Japan as an intern during her studies. She subsequently carried out research at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, where she discovered her passion for traditional Japanese folding techniques. Samira Boon also experiments with 3-dimensional textiles. The Spacer Chair was developed in 2007 from the ideas she first had in Japan to turn stylized technology into an art form by folding and draping 3D substrates and to manipulate warp-knitted spacer textiles creatively.
