World's first dynamic rope made from recycled material

Plastic recycling is state-of-the-art and is mainly used in textile sector by converting old PET bottles into filament yarns for clothing. When textile materials are recycled into textiles, the process normally results in an inferior material. This is why, until now, it has not been technically feasible to use recycled textiles to make dynamic ropes that meet the high safety requirements of EN 892. Compliance with the standard is crucial for climbing ropes, because human lives depend on them. The companies Edelrid GmbH & Co. KG, Isny/Germany, and Hoff- mann + Voss GmbH, Viersen/Ger-many, together with the Institut fur Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University (ITA), Aachen/Germany, have dedicated themselves to this recycling goal and have developed a fully certified rope made from 50% recycled pre-consumer ropes. In order to be able to feed the rope residues arising in production directly back into the production cycle, the starting material is milled and processed into agglomerate and later into granulate (Fig.). The challenge is to ob- tain spinnable material from which high-performance yarns can be produced that meet the high requirements in terms of strength, elongation, etc. Machine settings and the complete manufacturing process have to be modified for the production of a recycled rope. This has been successfully achieved, making the world's first dynamic recycled rope commercially available from spring 2021.
