As climbing arborists, we are expected to assess and define the ability of trees to support themselves, as well as the loads and forces we subject them to, during pruning or removal. Often, we deem tree structure to be "satisfactory," relying solely on our judgment. We determine acceptable load tolerances and work within them. While professional judgment, experience and education can bolster our assessments as climbing arborists, we are still just guessing. We complete our work without knowing how close we've come to failure, simply relying on the design of nature to carry the load.
