The fiber producer Kuraray Co. Ltd., Osaka/Japan, has completed a ¥ 2 billion expansion of its Kuralon PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) fiber plant by 5,000 tons/year. The plant in Okayama now has a capacity of 40,000 tons/year.rnIntroduced back in 1950, Kuralon was initially employed in clothing, as well as in fishing nets, ropes and agricultural and marine materials. Its high strength, high elasticity, long extensibility and alkali resistance have seen applications for the fiber expand, and it is now used in fiber-reinforced cement (FRC), paper, nonwoven fabrics and rubber materials. In recent years, the use of FRC in roofing materials has increased significantly, primarily to eradicate of asbestos in Western Europe and Japan. This end-use is now being widely adopted in Eastern Europe, Asia and Central and South America.
