The public interest in the Titanic's 100-year anniversary may prove to be an excellent way to get students excited about marine transportation and other related technologies. Bathymetry is a way to expand on that interest while meeting math, science, and technological standards. By utilizing a computer spreadsheet, graphing tools, and simple measuring tools, students can observe what is within a closed box without ever lifting the lid. This activity is another example of how technology is essential to science for the purpose of accessing remote locations, collecting data, and communicating the information.
