The Aycock MS Technology/STEM Magnet Program Virtual Bridge Design Challenge is an authentic introduction to the engineering design process. It is a socially relevant stand-alone STEM-centered activity that engages both male and female students. The fact that it utilizes free online resources (e.g., WPBD software, NBI Reports, Google Maps) is very important to cost-conscious administrators. As a stand-alone STEM activity, it is pre-integrated into core content and ready to use whenever there is a match between the standards in Table 2 and the standards being addressed within the curriculum of core subject areas.Social studies and language arts teachers may also use it; several STL standards align with social studies and language arts content. The history of the role of bridges in society and researching ways to fund the rebuilding of U.S. bridge infrastructure are just two examples of potential for cross-curricular collaboration. Finally, the virtual bridge design activity has the potential to place T&EE teachers in the middle of a school-wide student learning experience.
