摘要

Given the U.S. dependency upon petroleum products, a case study of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster is especially timely. Because this disaster highlights the regulatory, management, ethics, and technical complexity of deepwater oil drilling, there are many opportunities for enhancing technological literacy in primary and secondary classrooms. After students identify, analyze, and discuss the circumstances surrounding this disaster, students could assess the impacts of deepwater oil exploration and propose changes to energy policy or engage in engineering design activities that examine processes for remediating the impacts, such as a process for separating oil from water.
