The Apprentice School sponsored by Newport News Shipbuilding is a unique institution in many respects, and deliberately so. The school fills a unique niche in the post-secondary educational system, relating the workforce needs of Virginia's largest manufacturing employer to educational opportunities for men and women interested in a career in manufacturing. This particular model does an excellent job bridging the gap between competencies students acquired in high school and the competencies required for the workplace, for career advancement, and for the foundation necessary to engage in a lifelong process of continuing education within the framework of industry.
