One of the key features that draws many people to play video games is the fact that they are interactive-that is, you are not passively experiencing a story unfold as you would if you were watching a movie or television program. Video games allow the user to be actively engaged and in control of the action (Prensky, 2006). But what if the level of interaction was increased even more? What if, instead of determining which path a character takes, you could determine the number of paths for the game's character? Where each path leads? What surprises await the player at the end? What if, instead of simply playing video games, you were able to program them? Seventh grade students at Canonsburg Middle School are actively engaging in the creation of video games. The students are engaged at a much deeper level by creating their own games and programming them to function however they desire.
