The author looks at telecommunications in the rural areas and isolated communities of developing countries. Focusing on telecommunications as a means to overcome distance barriers to participation in the economy and social services, she reviews the overall linkage between telecommunications and the development process, discusses the benefits of telecommunications for rural and remote communities, examines the role of new technologies, and argues for better integration of (and higher investment in) telecommunications in rural development planning.
