Does it still make sense for urban planners and business entrepreneurs to think of the big city as a proper home for manufacturing? Such industry has historically been associated with cities, but many of the more productive and profitable companies have moved elsewhere. Still, urban manufacturing need not be an anachronism or an oxymoron. Some cities around the world continue to attract new manufacturing, much of it involving production of commodities such as clothing. Although working conditions in the sweatshops of Los Angeles, New York, and London that employ immigrant workers are substandard, sometimes even brutal, such shops nevertheless employ millions of workers.
